Loose working account papers of John Pykarell, cofferer of the Duke of Somerset, made during the reign of Edward VI, before and after the Duke's execution. Also includes accounts for work done at Somerset Place, London (leaves 53-67), a letter from Richard Whalley to John Pykarell regarding the date of Somerset's apprehension and when commissioners took inventory, May 11, ca. 1553 (leaf 63), and "The Surplusage of thaccompte of John Pykarell late cofferer w[i]th the late Duke of Som[er]sett" (leaf 68). With: Letter from Charles Seymour, Duke of Somerset, Petworth, to unknown female correspondent, 1730 September 19 (1 leaf), discussing estates obtained from his first marriage to Elizabeth Seymour (née Percy). Also a document describing "This great estate" (presumably Somerset Place) (2 leaves).

Politician. Charles Seymour was the 6th Duke of Somerset, born 1662, and died 1743. Somerset was a politician, Speaker of the House of Lords in 1690; he had supported William of Orange in 1688. He won, with his wife, Elizabeth Percy, the confidence of Queen Anne. He lost his place in Council in 1711, and was reinstated until 1716. He was also a member of the Kit-Cat Club.
